Between April 28 and May 8, 2026, the platform went from roughly eight selectable styles to three — and only one of them is free. Making sense of it is harder than it should be, because the official documentation was never updated. Character.AI chat styles in July 2026: three left, one free
The current roster:
- PipSqueak 2 — the forced default for everyone, and the only style free users get. Shorter, punchier, dialogue-led replies.
- DeepSqueak — c.ai+ subscribers only ($9.99/month). Long, descriptive, “poetic” roleplay with scene description and distinct character voices.
- Soft Launch — c.ai+ only, restricted to users 18 and over. The “bolder energy” style, less interrupted by blocks than the others.
Everything else — Roar, Meow, Nyan, Goro, Dynamic, Pawly, and the original PipSqueak — is gone. Not hidden behind a setting: removed on the backend.
What each style actually does
PipSqueak 2 — the default you didn’t choose
PipSqueak 2 shipped to subscribers on April 14, 2026 and became the forced default for everyone on April 28. On paper it delivers faster turn-taking and a memory upgrade. In practice, the community’s reception was brutal. The single most upvoted description of the problem, from r/CharacterAI: “98% detail. 2% actual dialogue.” Another user’s verdict — “the new model is so ass it cured people’s chronic addictions” — collected 844 upvotes, and a thread about screen time collapsing from nine hours to four minutes drew over 7,600. That is not a niche grumble; that is the platform’s core audience describing the style they are now required to use.
To be fair to it: PipSqueak 2 is fast, its replies are tighter when it behaves, and some users prefer its bursts to the older styles’ rambling. But “some users prefer it” is doing heavy lifting in that sentence.
DeepSqueak — the one worth paying for, most of the time
DeepSqueak is the immersion style: long, descriptive responses, internal thoughts, scene-setting, and — its real differentiator — distinct voices for multiple characters in the same chat that it can hold for hours. If you run long-form roleplay, this is the style that still feels like what the platform used to be.
Its weaknesses are just as consistent: it gets flowery to the point of parody, and users report it looping or repeating during US peak hours (roughly 8–11pm ET). It sits behind the c.ai+ paywall, and no, the subscription does not relax the content filter — independent testing in June 2026 found the filter identical across tiers.
Soft Launch — bolder, adults-only, on borrowed time
Soft Launch has the strangest history of the three. It was pulled on April 28 along with Roar, then returned on May 8 behind the c.ai+ paywall with an 18+ restriction. It produces bolder, more mature replies with fewer interruptions — which is exactly why the community treats it with a mix of devotion and grief. It was famously nerfed once already, after screenshots of unfiltered chats spread and underage users were found bypassing the age gate. It also reportedly runs on legacy infrastructure the company wants to retire, which is why every tracker covering it uses phrases like “enjoy it while it lasts.”
What happened to Roar?
Short answer: removed on April 28, 2026, permanently.
Roar launched in February 2025 as the free all-rounder — the official blog described it as a “mix of speed & smarts” — and over the following year it became the community’s workhorse for structured roleplay: short, solid replies that committed to a tone and stayed there. When the April change landed, Roar and Pawly were removed outright, without even the grace period in a legacy menu that Meow, Nyan, Goro and Dynamic briefly got before the May 8 cleanup.
There is no toggle, hidden setting, or browser extension that brings Roar back. It was deprecated on the backend, not hidden in the UI — anything claiming otherwise is selling you something. The closest available substitute is DeepSqueak with style-hint prompting, which the tracker roborhythms estimates recovers perhaps 60–70% of what Roar did. That estimate is theirs, not an official number, but it matches the community consensus: partial, not full.
The full list of removed styles
For anyone keeping score, everything that existed and no longer does: Roar (structured roleplay favorite), Meow (the fast, shallow one), Nyan (the original premium style), Goro (the restrained, safe one), Dynamic (auto-selected a style per conversation), Pawly (experimental, multilingual, inconsistent), and the original PipSqueak, which was absorbed into PipSqueak 2. The February 2025 launch trio grew to roughly eight styles at the peak in early 2026, then collapsed to today’s three in the space of ten days.
PipSqueak 2 vs DeepSqueak: which is better?
This is the comparison most people actually need, so, plainly:
- Speed: PipSqueak 2, clearly. DeepSqueak takes its time and loops under load.
- Dialogue quality: DeepSqueak. PipSqueak 2’s defining flaw is describing instead of talking.
- Long sessions: DeepSqueak holds tone for hours; PipSqueak 2 starts drifting around 80 messages and merges minor characters.
- Group chats: DeepSqueak keeps character voices distinct. PipSqueak 2 blends them.
- Price: PipSqueak 2 is free. DeepSqueak requires c.ai+.
If you chat casually in short bursts, the free default is genuinely fine. If you build long scenes and the answer quality is the whole point, DeepSqueak is the only current style that delivers it — during off-peak hours.
So which chat style should you pick?
Free user: you have no decision to make — it’s PipSqueak 2. The practical advice that actually helps: keep sessions shorter (drift compounds past ~80 messages), and put explicit style instructions in your persona or the first message (“reply mostly in dialogue, minimal narration”) — it doesn’t fix the style, but it fights its worst habit.
Paying for c.ai+ mainly for roleplay depth: DeepSqueak, and it’s not close.
Over 18 and chafing against interruptions: Soft Launch — with the understanding that it has been nerfed before and sits on infrastructure the company reportedly wants gone.
Waiting for Roar to come back: stop waiting. Redirect that hope toward DeepSqueak 2 — confirmed as “in training” in April 2026, still unreleased as of late July. If it inherits Roar’s discipline instead of PipSqueak 2’s monologue habit, the story changes again.
